things kept hidden
As Jesus was turning towards Jerusalem for the last time, He told His disciples that everything written by the prophets about the Son of Man would be fulfilled, including his humiliation, execution, and resurrection. Luke continues, the disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what He was talking about (Luke 18:31-34). This suggests that it was God Himself Who hid the significance of what would happen to Jesus. So to speak, He kept His Counsel to Himself, until it all would be accomplished. In the fullness of time, Jesus Himself, Risen from the dead, would begin to make it clear to them, though some would still doubt (Matthew 28:17). The Holy Spirit would continue to explain, leading the disciples into all the Truth, just as Jesus said He would (John 16:13).
We believers in Jesus have The Spirit of Truth in us, and we have the Truth of The Word of God before us. Nonetheless, there are still realities of God and meanings of Life which are hidden from us. We're told in both Testaments that eye has not seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived - the things God has prepared for those Who love Him (Isaiah 64:4; 1 Cor. 2:9). Further, we are to claim and proclaim the mystery of Christ (Col. 4:3), previously hidden, now revealed, but still not yet fully comprehended until glory.
So as we continue to press on to know God and His Will in Scripture and in prayer, both inspired by The Holy Spirit, may our attitude not be so much one of satisfied comprehension, but rather of wondering reception. May we treasure what God has chosen to reveal to us, and may we also humbly wait for what will be revealed in the time, and in the eternity, to come.
