our eye(s)
As we consider how God's Eyes behold everyone and everything -- the good, the bad, and the indifferent in this beautiful and yet broken creation -- we in Christ are encouraged that His Eye is upon us in Love, guiding us to Himself.
And so our eyes should look to the God Who looks at us. A godly leader of Israel once said to God, we don't know what to do, but our eyes are on You (2 Chronicles 20:12). In this, he correctly diagnoses the human condition, and the appropriate viewpont. The Psalmist writes that our eyes look to the Lord our God as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master (Psalm 132:2). We are to watch for God's Hand at work, in action and in communication, so that we are ready to respond to His Presence and to His Call. Our focus on God in the ordinary as well as the religious aspects of our life should become so intense that Jesus could say of us, if your eye is single, your whole body will be full of light (Matthew 6:22, NKJV).
St. Irenaeus, a Greek bishop of the early second century, famously said, "The glory of God is a human being fully alive", but then adds a less-known conclusion, "and to be alive consists in beholding God". Let's fix our eyes on God as we pray, as we work, and as we breathe, such that we have a singular focus on Him, and thereby become infused with His Life, and flooded with His Light, to share and to shine all around.
