His Mercy endures forever
As I read through the Psalms, I'm arrested by the persistent refrain of Psalm 136, all 26 of them: His Mercy endures forever. I wonder if there's a message here with that seemingly-endless repetition?
Yes, in fact, the Mercy of The Lord does endure forever, and way more than 26 times. His Mercy repeats itself over and over and over again. God's Mercy -- also rendered "Love", or "Kindness", or "Favor", or "Goodliness" (?) -- "endures", or "lasts", or "persists", or "remains" - "forever", even "forever and ever". As a song reminds us, "Your Love never fails, it never gives up, it never runs out on me, because on and on and on and on it goes, before it overwhelms and satisfies my soul, and I never ever have to be afraid. One thing remains: Your Love". We would do well to remember this refrain, committing it to memory, or at least the song which alludes to it. 26 verses encourage us not to forget that His Mercy, His Love endures forever!
The Loving Mercy declared in Psalm 136 is to be remembered in all situations. Psalm 135 is a full-throated endorsement of all the Good God does. His Mercy endures forever. Psalm 137 is a full-throated lament of all the evil God has allowed. His Love endures forever.
Let's encourage one another with these words, in The One Who stands behind them. And let's invite others to test and see this Truth - the Words and The God Who promises them.
