Lent with The Abbey

In our Mission of helping leaders and followers of Jesus to discern, learn, and live in His Way, we invite you to observe a Holy Lent with us:

by self-examination and repentance;

- use "The Questionnaire of God", which you can find HERE, as a guide for recovery and renewal

- adopt or revise an ongoing Way of Life in Christ by using the Abbey's Way of Virtue, available here:  https://www.abbeyoftheway.us/the-way

by prayer, fasting, and self-denial;

- join in prayer online on weekdays at any of these times:  Morning Prayer 8-8:30AM; Terce 10-10:10AM; Midday Prayer 12-12:20PM; None 3-3:10PM; Evening Prayer 7-7:20PM; Compline 9-9:15PM (see fuller descriptions on this page).  Join on Zoom Meeting #5087995011 or at www.tinyurl.com/zoomtheabbey.

- fast from Tuesday dinner through Wednesday afternoon

- ask at least daily to be filled with the Holy Spirit and then do whatever He tells you, particularly in serving others, reminiscent of the Wedding at Cana, when the jars were filled to the brim, and the servants did whatever Jesus told them (John 2:1-11).

- consider joining our Followers of The Way Community for laity (https://www.abbeyoftheway.us/followers) our Forerunners Fellowship for pastoral leaders (https://www.abbeyoftheway.us/forerunners), or our This is The Way Cohort for 20-somethings (see below).

and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word.

“This is The Way” Young Adult Cohort

Although the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, your teachers will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them. Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "this is the way; walk in it." Isaiah 30:20-21

This year-long weekly cohort on Sunday afternoons at The Abbey of The Way will help participants to hear and respond to that Voice Who says, “This is The Way”. Designed for “20-somethings”, a generation which has experienced adversity, affliction, and a lack of teachers, the group is growing in discipleship, discernment, and discipline. Each week of each month we look at an Attribute of God, then an Virtue of Jesus associated with that Attribute which we are to live out, and then some Spiritual Discipline to keep us focused on The Way. The format includes a brief presentation of an aspect of The Way, large and small group discussion, and praying for one another as we respond to The Way. Each gathering runs on Sundays from 4:00-5:30PM, but participants will be welcome to come before to hang out or rest, and afterward for BYO dinner at The Abbey for fellowship. Those unable to come to a particular gathering can attend on Zoom. Other guest presenters may join in from time-to-time.

Weekday Prayer Online

You are welcome to join a small group of believers who gather weekdays at each of four prayer services taken from the Anglican Book of Common Prayer

Morning Prayer: From 8:00-8:30AM, a service consisting of prayer, Psalms, a New Testament reading, a hymn or song of praise, and a brief reflection on God’s Word. Those who participate appreciate the opportunity to begin the day in the company of Jesus and others.

Terce (third-hour prayer): From 10:00-10:10AM, a brief service of prayer, Psalm and reflection, as we get into the heart of the day.

Midday Prayer: From 12:00-12:20PM, a service with prayer, a short Psalm, a hymn, and a brief reflection on the circumstances of its being composed. This is a wonderful way to invite God to invade a day that might otherwise be experienced without being conscious of His abiding Presence.

None (ninth-hour prayer): From 3:00-3:10PM, a brief service of prayer, Psalm and reflection, as we head toward the end of the working day.

Evening Prayer: From 7:00-7:20PM, a service designed for those with children, but suitable for people of all ages, consisting of prayer, a New Testament reading, a brief reflection on God’s Word, and a song of praise Those who participate appreciate the opportunity to end the active part of the day in the Presence of God and others.

Compline: From 9:00-9:15PM, a service consisting of prayer, a psalm, a short biblical reading, a hymn or song of praise, and a time of thanksgiving for the day. Those who participate are grateful to be quieting down at the end of the day with others looking to Jesus.

Those wishing to participate can come to Zoom Meeting #5087995011, or go to www.tinyurl.com/zoomtheabbey.
